One of my favorite forms of photography is night photography, or more specifically painting with light. It is so interesting because it lets you be more creative and in a sense, control your photo. You can also stage the photo letting you use more things and again use your mind creatively.
To get started, you will want to set your camera up on a tripod. If you don’t have one, like me, set your camera on a flat and stable surface. Set your camera to manual mode, and set the shutter speed between f/8 and f/11. This lets more light in to the photo. Next you want to get a flashlight. Turn on the camera, and then turn on the flashlight. Then run around in the shape you want to create. Keep your body moving so it wont show up in the image.
For this picture I wanted to try and write a couple words with the light. I am not sure what those words were supposed to be. You can clearly make out one word, and it says love. I think that is quite ironic since I am a hopeless romantic. I think this photo is interesting because there is so much going on but at the same time there isn’t too much.
In this photo I ran down the driveway waving my light side to side. The car in the background was also perfectly timed and zoomed in the back, creating a red streak of light.
These two photos were me just messing around and running around with the light. It created two effects. I squiggly effect and the other one is a little circle loop effect.
Another fun thing to do is play with flashlight settings. Flicker the light and you could get a cool dotted effect. Spin fairy lights why the change colors. Have fun with!
